What to expect

This 5 week block  is designed to run either after school or for home schoolers interested in sewing. It will combine learning new skills and techniques while making some lovely items on the sewing machine. Projects will vary depending on the interests of the group but will likely start with simple projects such as tote bags and cushion covers.

Over the five weeks, students will develop their confidence and skills on the sewing machine. If they want to continue their journey, they can sign up for another block after half term.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners aged 11-15 years old

What to bring?

All materials will be provided so all that you need to bring is enthusiasm.

Key skills will include some of the following depending on the projects undertaken:

• Understand the glossary of sewing terms
• Learn how to thread up a sewing machine and set tensions
• Learn about different types of fabric
• Learn how to use the direction of the fabric grain and lay pattern pieces on the fold.
• Understand different ways of cutting out (scissors, rotary cutter)
• Using the correct seam allowance

•Using interfacing
• Matching notches
• Pinning pieces ready to sew
• Sewing together with the correct seam allowance
• Finishing seams
• Troubleshooting
• Hemming
• Neatening finishes
• Adding trim
