Introduction to Sewing on a Sewing Machine – Morning Course

What to expect

This is a short course for those who have never used a sewing machine before or have not sewn using one for a while. It will introduce you to the vocabulary associated with using a sewing machine and basic skills. There are three sessions each resulting in a simple project made. The idea is that you learn new skills in a practical and fun way. It is suitable for ages 16 – 99 years old.

By the end of this course you will be confident in threading a sewing machine and changing speed, stitch type and length. You will learn how to change and use different sewing machine presser feet in order to sew button holes and zips.

Print outs with glossaries and guidance will be given out and you will go home with examples to use as references for future projects.

What to bring?

Just your lovely self and your enthusiasm. All materials will be provided as will the use of our fantastic Janome sewing machines.

If you would rather learn alone at your own pace or if you wish to have help learning how to use your own sewing machine then a one-to-one lesson can be booked.

Overview

Lesson 1: Getting Acquainted with the Sewing Machine

Project: Make a little draw-string bag.

Key skills covered:

– Threading a machine.
– Using a machine to stitch straight lines and back stitching.
– Creating a channel.

Lesson 2: Understanding Basic Stitches and finishes

Project: Make a simple tote bag with a button fastening.

Key skills covered:

– Changing the presser foot and how to use different stitches.
– Sewing a button hole foot to make a button hole.
– Sewing on a button (hand sewing)

Lesson 3: Inserting a zip and following a pattern.

Project: Make a lined zipped pouch.

Key skills covered:

– How to follow pattern instructions.
– How to sew a zip in place with a zipper foot.
